Stanley Park Open Archive

The tournament for everyone, since 1931

Our public park, amateur “Grand Slam” tournament in July has provided for many years the highlights of this QEhardrock’s tennis viewing for the season. Stanley Park is a nice place to loiter when its hot, and just off court behind the fence is a fine spot from which to watch matches.  I enjoy watching the talented juniors, cheering for friends and acquaintances competing in the “Adult” NTRP categories, and watching the good Open Singles players,  but it is always the Open Doubles events that most attract my attention.

U18 Juniors, qualifying round, 2011

Anyway, this tennis fan has been attending the tournament for years enough to begin forgetting when it was certain players first achieved success, how many times they may have appeared in finals, and when they were last seen. So I am making this archive of the main Open Event Finals, to help me recall these tidbits of local tennis lore, and to better inform my conversations in the park, when attending the next Stanley Park Open. Perhaps others will likewise from time to time find such an archive useful.

Behind the bleachers, first day, 2011.

Big tournament sponsors, when there have been such, have given the event name their own twist. I have used whatever name my sources (USTA Tennis Link, MatchPoint magazine, or the Vancouver Sun and Province newspapers) have used, often reflecting the sponsor’s identity.  “Everyday Champions” (2008-2010) refers to a program developed by Tennis Canada and the Dairy Farmers of Canada. Where players do not have a home mentioned in brackets, they are either from the Metro Vancouver area, or my sources have yielded no information on residence (usually they do). To rate a mention of home in this archive, players must be from further north than Lions Bay, further east than Abbotsford, below the border, or west of the mainland. Names of provinces, states, and countries are represented by the two letter postal abbreviation for that jurisdiction. Find them all listed here.

All entries above came from the USTA Tennis Link pages, which lists scores for all draws of the tournament. Or it did. One was able to look at the draws by using their Search Page, found here. Since I first wrote this entry, the USTA has changed the layout of its Tennis Link search page. As of March, 2012, I have not been able to find the Stanley Park Open using it. Good luck to all who may try.

Information recorded below is drawn from the pages of Tennis BC’s Match Point magazine, helpful informants, and the Vancouver Sun, or Province newspapers. The internet has yielded snippets of information, like place of residence for some players. Several entries are still a work in progress. If you know names and/or scores that are missing, or see an error, please let me know via a comment.

Many thanks to Rolf Martin, of the Calgary Tennis Club, for providing player names and scores for 1983, and corrections and additions for some finals in the 80s and 90s. There remain holes in the information listed for some years. Help, help!

Until I find time to research the Library’s microfilm section of old Province and Sun newspapers, this will be all for now. Anyone having missing information, or who can fill me in on players and scores prior to 1983, is invited to please let me know via a comment below.

  1. Rolf Martin says:

I like your list of Stanley Park winners as it’s a tournament I went out to watch many times so many years ago. I am able to fill in many of the missing scores/finalists from the early years so was hoping you could send me an email I could forward them to, as I tried to list them here and something went amiss and they disappeared. Probably it’s just due to my inept computer skills, which are better served if I could just type out a seperate email with all the facts. Thanks.

  2. qehardrock says:

Thanks a lot Rolf. I’ve sent you an e-mail and eagerly await any information you can add to this archive. I don’t know if you should worry about computer skills. These comment text boxes may not accept a lot of writing. Seems to me I had that problem trying to make a comment on some other web site, not so long ago. As far as this blog goes, comments are only occasional, so I have not looked into what limitations there might be. Maybe I should.

    Cheers,
